Core Energetics

Core Energetics allows a deeper approach to growth and healing than can be accessed through talk therapy alone. By including the body in the work, we develop a sense of presence and groundedness, connect to emotion on a deeper level, and feel our truth and power. Core provides a framework for working with the flow of energy in the body, along with an understanding of how five typical early life challenges effect our current functioning.

I am a graduate of the four-year Core Energetics professional training program, have completed a post-graduate year, and have taught for many years on the faculty of the Institute of Core Energetics. In my individual, couple, and group sessions, I blend Core Energetics into the work.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a general term for a range of therapies that have one important thing in common. They are all based on the understanding that our own thoughts - not external factors like people or situations - cause many of our feelings and behaviors. In my view, this approach is very empowering. You may have gotten yourself into a challenging situation by virtue of your own thinking. But you likewise have the power to get yourself out of it.

I am impressed by the power of Internal Family Systems (IFS) to boost the effectiveness of CBT by zeroing in on the parts, or subroutines, that carry the dysfunctional beliefs. Once we validate that these thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors were necessary at some point in the past, they can be easily unburdened.

EMDR

EMDR is an acronym for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an innovative clinical treatment that has successfully helped over a million individuals who have survived trauma, such as sexual abuse, domestic violence, combat, and crime.

EMDR is a complex method of psychotherapy that integrates many of the successful elements of a range of therapeutic approaches in combination with eye movements or other forms of rhythmical stimulation in ways that stimulate the brain’s information processing system. With EMDR therapy it is unnecessary to delve into decades-old psychological material, but rather, by activating the information-processing system of the brain, people can achieve their therapeutic goals at a rapid rate, with recognizable changes that don’t disappear over time.

  • I have completed both levels of the EMDR training and an advanced training course with EMDR founder, Francine Shapiro.

 Hypnotherapy

Note: While I still do an occasional hypnotherapy session, I’m finding that IFS can achieve similar results in less time.

I was certified as a hypnotherapist in 1995 by the Wellness Institute. Hypnotherapy is most useful when you are stuck in a pattern of maladaptive emotional response but are not sure why. In a 90 minute session, we can often discover the past experience(s) that are the root of the problem, release some energy from the past trauma, provide healing for the wounded “inner child,” and let go of negative beliefs that sabotage effective action in life.
