Internal Family Systems

IFS is a new model for therapy that I find very exciting.  Ever say, "A part of me wants to do one thing, but another part wants to do something else"?  Or decide to exercise when you get home, or eat a healthy dinner, but find yourself following another directive when the time comes?  Or react to someone in a destructive way, knowing that you don't want to, but finding yourself unable to stop?  You are experiencing clearly that various parts of a person can take charge at different times.

Richard Schwartz, the founder of IFS, has developed a brilliant way to work with these internal parts, to help them release burdens from the past, find new healthy roles, and allow the Self to lead the system.  The approach also allows connection with and recovery of the hurt and scared internal parts, which are called exiles.  When the various parts relax and stop trying to run things, the Self naturally emerges.  I experience Self as both personal, facilitating wise choices in life, and transpersonal, revealing our oneness with all that is.

I have been working with this model for about six years and have done several workshops with Dr. Schwartz.  I have completed the IFS Level I training, am currently taking Level II, and will be presenting at their annual conference in October, 2010.
